Earlier this week Vuelio published their annual ‘Top 10 UK PR blogs list‘. It’s a great list – I read the vast majority of the blogs on it (although one was completely new to me which is always exciting to find). Stephen Waddington and Neville Hobson top that list – and both are brilliant bloggers so it’s well deserved, but in an industry dominated by women, I was staggered that not a single one of the ten was female.
I did a bit of digging to find out what the Vuelio methodology is for compiling that list and Wadds kindly pointed me in the direction of their FAQs where it became really obvious that it was possible that female bloggers aren’t getting listed because they’re not actually on Vuelio’s database.
I thought about compiling a list of top 10 female bloggers myself, but I don’t have a scientific way to crunch any numbers and even though there are some flaws in Vuelio’s method, it’s better than my ‘just list the 10 people you really like to read’ method. So I approached Vuelio and asked, if I could give them a substantial list of female UK PR bloggers, would they please crunch the numbers? – to my delight they said yes!
So here’s the list of 50 UK female PR bloggers I submitted to them (listed here in alphabetical order). There was no scientific method to compiling the list – I just wrote down the ones I was aware of, put a call out on Twitter for other people to flag female PR blogs to me, did some digging on Google and came up with this 50. If you’re a female UK PR blogger and not on this list you can submit your blog to their database yourself.
I look forward to seeing what Vuelio’s analysis says – and I’d be really interested to know if they had had these 50 in the original mix, would the top 10 UK PR blogs have looked any different.
Over to you, Vuelio.

I’ve separated out the final two as they may be a bit controversial as they’re both run by men, but they’d argue that they are contributor driven blogs and feature contributions from many female PRs (in fact, possibly more female than male – but I’ll let them crunch the numbers on that).

I have the opposite problem. All of the leading contenders for my PR student blogging competition are female (and many of their names are listed in your top 50 above).
I’m worried that I (we?) many not be doing enough to encourage young men into public relations.
You seem to have a more balanced intake into the Taylor Bennett Foundation programme (judging from the photos). I wonder whether that’s partly because the opportunity tends to be in corporate PR?
I think the corporate/financial element does play a part, Richard. When we had programmes sponsored by a fashion/beauty agency we had a much higher proportion of female applicants.

Good list, thanks for pointing me to some blogs I didn’t know about before. I think many of these women would agree that they don’t blog as frequently as many of the men that made the Vuelio list, and that may have impacted whatever analytic algorithm that they used to compile their list. In the end, lists are random in my opinion, and not a real mark of influence. Real influence is gained by professionalism and insight. So I ‘hat tip’ the gents that made Vuelio’s list, but I also recognize that many of the women you mention above (and yourself included!) don’t need to be on any list to validate their influence in our industry.
Thanks for taking the time to comment 🙂 I thought it was really weird that someone like Rachel Miller, who is a prolific blogger and I would have thought has tonnes of influence, wasn’t on that list which is why I started looking at it more closely. There’s no perfect methodology and while there is an element of editorialising and personal bias no list will be truly reflective of the level of influence but they can improve the methodology by widening the initial pool of data to include more female bloggers which may give a better view of whether the top ten UK PR bloggers are really all male and female PR bloggers just need to up their game, or not.
